Imda Dol, the Laschen of Haridol, has been hiding for ten years following her mother's death. When their enemy, the Zander, discovers her location, they send a ship to demand her surrender. The enemy leader, Prime Minister Aljon, plans to use her to pressure Haridol into ending a decade-long war.
Cruiser commander Dary Rotan confronts the invader, and a fierce battle erupts when he refuses to surrender Dol. The Haridol commander makes an extraordinary offer in response to the enemy's threats of retaliation. In exchange for a crew to bring Dol home, he will provide Rotan with a ship equipped with a star drive, a technology unknown to their science.
During their two-week voyage to Haridol, they are repeatedly harassed and attacked in attempts to capture Dol. Battle lines are drawn, and escalation appears inevitable.
